Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the federal government will take measures to permanently prevent senior members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps from entering Canada. During his speech at a press conference, he emphasized that the intended action will permanently affect half of the senior members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – that is, about 10,000 members.
The Prime Minister of Canada said at a press conference today: “We are using the most powerful tools at our disposal to crack down on this brutal regime.”
This action has taken place after weeks of pressure from the official opposition to add the name of the IRGC to Canada’s list of foreign terrorist organizations. Today’s action by Ottawa does not designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization under the Canadian criminal code, but the government uses the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) to target members of the Iranian government and the IRGC.
