Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly today announced new sanctions against Iranian officials and entities based on the Special Economic Measures Act (SEMA). These sanctions are in addition to the October 3rd sanctions, which were set in response to the systematic violation of human rights by the Iranian government and its destabilizing activities in the region.
New sanctions have been imposed against 17 individuals and 3 institutions that the Canadian government believes to be involved in flagrant violations of the rights of Iranians and women and the dissemination of false information to justify the repression of the Iranian regime and their persecution. Here are some of the individuals sanctioned by the Canadian government today:
Saeed Mortazavi, the former prosecutor of the Islamic Revolutionary Court.
Amir Hatami, Major General of the Iranian Army, former Minister of Defense and Senior Advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces.
Hossein Shariatmadari, the editor-in-chief of Kayhan newspaper
Manouchehr Amanollahi, police chief of Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari province.
Gholamreza Ziyai, former director of Rajaeeshahr and Evin prisons.
Peyman Jebeli, head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.
Ali Larijani, a member of the Expediency Council, a former official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a former speaker of the Iranian parliament.
Mohammad Javad Zarif, former Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to the laws of Canada, financial dealings with sanctioned individuals and entities are prohibited and any asset they may have in Canada will be seized. Sanctioned individuals are prohibited from entering Canada as well.
